To become a Marketing Consultant you do not need a university degree. It helps to have run your own business or even a succession of businesses. If you’ve failed a couple of times along the way that also helps because failing, learning and picking yourself up is all part and parcel of what it takes to become successful in business as well as being able to empathize with others who may be struggling.
However, failing in business and then giving up (unless there are very good reasons) shows that you haven’t got what it takes to make it in the commercial world or for that reason being a business advisor.

You will be taken more seriously if you are older, wiser and more experienced than if you had just graduated with no practical, hands on experience in running a business. Theory, gained at university or some other institution of higher learning, is fine for starting work as an employee but for credibility as an advisor it should also be backed up by the experience of having done time in the trenches.
